I have suffered from Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) for over half my life. HS is a chronic, incredibly painful and shameful skin affliction. It affects you in very personal and private parts of your body. And, it does a major number on your self-esteem, too.
And, for the longest time – over 20 years – I didn’t have a name for my skin ‘stuff’, despite seeing numerous doctors and specialists. I thought I was the only one who developed blisters and boils in unmentionable places. Frankly, I thought I was a bit of a freak.
Back in 2013, I decided I needed to take a more proactive role in my health caper. I found myself a great functional doctor and we started working on my health. I learned that I had scary-low vitamin D levels; that I have an MTHFR gene mutation; that I had a severely dysregulated gut (and a serious parasite infection to boot); and, that I was a MEGA stress head. Later, I discovered that I had major periodontal issues that would require surgery.
I also discovered the Autoimmune Protocol. And that framework has quite literally changed how I navigate my life.
My HS symptoms are approximately 95% improved on where they were. My vitamin D levels are back in line with where they should be. I eat a nutrient rich diet to help my methylation pathways and keep my gut healthy. And, I have introduced a number of rituals and stress management practices to lower my stress levels and improve my resilience. In a nutshell, it boils down to making diet and lifestyle choices that serve me.
I am so committed to my AIP way of life that I now help other women make choices that serve them.
