The Rum Diary is worth a squizz…

The Rum Diary Movie Poster

Last night we went to see The Rum Diary.  If you are not familiar with the movie, it is based on the novel by the same name written by Hunter S. Thompson.

It’s a beautifully tangled love story of jealousy, treachery, and alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s. The narrator, freelance journalist Paul Kemp (played by Depp), when drawn to a sexy and mysterious woman, is soon thrust into a world where corruption and get-rich-quick schemes rule and anything – including murder – is permissible.

Johnny Depp weaves his Johnny Depp understated magic on the movie.  Aaron Eckhart plays Hal Sanderson, the wealthy, corrupt businessman with just the right amount of slime.  Giovanni Ribisi is brilliant as the drugged out Moberg. Amber Heard – well, she looks gorgeous.

Things I REALLY want to do now that I’ve seen the movie:

  1. Read the book!
  2. See Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
  3. See more of Giovanni Ribisi (which I always say after seeing him act.  He’s fab’.)
  4. Download the soundtrack.  (Actually, that should be #1).  You can preview it here.

I reckon’ it’s worth seeing!

Hi,
A great review. Sounds like you really enjoyed the movie that is great, so many times I have gone to the movies and walk out very disappointed.
This isn’t my type of movie, but I can certainly see it’s appeal for those that like a good drama. 🙂

Hey Mags – what type of movie do you enjoy?

I am more into the Horror, Sci-Fi, Action. I don’t mind some dramas, but I would not go out of my way to watch them. But the special effects in some of the other sorts of movies, look fantastic on the big screen, and if in 3D even more so,definitely worth a trip to the movies to watch. 😀

Hunger Games starts this week! 🙂

Totally checking out the soundtrack…I love me some good music (the hubby’s a crazed audiophile), and the movie looks entertaining – how could it not be with that cast?!
🙂
The rain calmed down yet? What a crazy day here!

It has stopped raining (for the moment). Man, it was all happening last night. We had rolling thunder and buckets of the wet stuff. Not very Sydney!

You’re right about the cast – fabulous!

Hey – how are those tootsies looking???

Super sweet! They are a sparkly orange…looking lovely and ready for showing off! Feeling great too (or maybe that’s just the red wine tonight – hehe!) – Oh man, we had a mixed bag here too…hope you have a fab weekend! Love from Vancity! xo

I thought it was quite a great movie. Certainly different from all those fantasy movies Depp’s been doing but a nice refreshing change of pace and scenery by him. After watching the movie I felt strangely like dropping everything, and becoming a journalist. Moving to a foreign land and throwing yourself into the throes of chasing a good story has a certain appeal to it. I think.

Hey Nate – Cheers for stopping in! Sign of a good movie, when they can make you want to do that, I reckon’… 🙂
