I’ve become a bit of a serial farmers market devotee on Saturday mornings. I love them. You can take your dog (always a bonus in Sydney). You can talk to food providores, who are all enthusiastic about their chosen product. You can select fabulous fresh organic produce. You can sample new things (this time I tried an achacha for the first time. Google it – yummy but a little labour intensive). AND – you can do all this and be home for breakfast and a friendly squabble over the best bits of the Saturday papers.
This week we toddled off to Eveleigh Markets at Carriageworks in Redfern. It’s not as big as the monthly SMH Growers Market at Pyrmont, but it has the advantage of being held every Saturday and it’s undercover. Given the wet summer we are having, that’s quite a drawcard.
Eveleigh Markets also have the wonderful Kylie Kwong and her team from Billy Kwong cooking every Saturday. You’ve got to love a home-grown celebrity chef who is so passionate about her product she gets up at the crack of dawn every Saturday to face up to market-goers! Kudos to Kylie.
Some of the providores can be found at more than one market. Last week we picked up some hazelnut dukkah and some dry roasted hazelnuts from this charming gent. Yummo!

We had a great chat with the lovely lady at the Fresh Pops stand (she was fab’!) and picked up four icey cold Fresh Pops for $16. She chose Blood Orange Passionfruit, Apple Passionfruit Mango, Lemon Buttermilk, and Spiced Coffee for us. It’s worth heading to the markets just for these.
