Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try! (Dr. Seuss)

Who does this? Who has the imagination and whimsy to come up with the lovely idea of creating images out of discarded pencil savings? Marta Altés – that’s who.

Originally from Barcelona, Marta started her career as a graphic designer before moving to the UK to study children’s book illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. She now works as an illustrator, and by the looks of things, it was an inspired decision.

Her work puts a smile on my face…

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities. (Dr. Seuss)

Marta’s website is just as whimsical as her playing with pencil shavings. Go check it out here.

This is soooo cute, my fav is the flamenco dancer! Who sold have thought!!

I know – so clever and yet beautifully naive, as well.

Absolutely charming totally clever. Love your work.

Hey ho! Cheers for stopping by. 🙂

Who thinks of these things?! Cute.

Adorable, aren’t they? Imagine them as posters in a child’s room…

I LOVE these! I am going to show them to my students – except for maybe the Hell Yeah one.

Do you know what I love? every time I get an e-mail notification from you and it starts with your ‘mystree lady’ e-mail addy. Cracks me up every time. 🙂

That’s been my e-mail since I started dating Cap’n Firepants. He thought at first that it was “my street lady”. In retrospect, that might have said a lot about what he thought of me at the time…

Wonderful! I am now smiling too as I sit beside my own little artist who is currently perfecting hand drawn fonts for comic book making…. 🙂 This is such a fun find!

Isn’t it? So clever, yet such a simple idea. Brilliant!

I love this so much. Thank you. 🙂

Happy to have made your day a little brighter, Sam. 🙂

Absolutely love it, I used to have an art shop so I can identify some of those shavings to the exact pencil type! I loved opening the door to the smell of coloured pencils every morning- the artist’s croissant you could say.

That you can identify the bloody pencils is a wee bit scary, P/L. I think I may need to take you out for a coffee…

Brilliant! I might have a go… !

Excellent. I await your images on your blog!!! Will they be food oriented?

Haha, I suppose it is a likliehood! If nothing else it’s a good excuse to sharpen some pencils – one of the nicest smells there is, I think! And strangely relaxing! It must remind me of childhood!

Brilliant! It is the small thing that matters!!

Yep – now why couldn’t I have thought of it?

These are really beautiful and the whimsy in them is truly delightful.
Very Inspiring
